Where road work is happening in Indianapolis in November — and how to detour around it – IndyStar

by Arifa Rana

A flurry of quick road projects around Indianapolis wrapped up in October, but November also has its fair share of construction.
Part of this is the continuation of several longterm projects, like the Indiana Department of Transportation‘s North Split project and the reconstruction of Delaware and Market streets downtown.
But Citizens Energy Group also has sewer work going on, particularly for a leg of its 28-mile DigIndy tunnel project.
Here’s where to expect some traffic adjustments due to road work in November.
Watch: Your questions about the North Split project, answered
Where: The westbound lane from Monument Circle to Illinois Street and the right-most northbound lane of Illinois where it meets Market.
When: Through the end of the year.
Why: To rebuild the street with an improved roadway and sidewalk paver system, ADA-compliant ramps and crosswalks, streetscaping and more parking. This is the same work being done to East Market Street between Alabama and Delaware streets, which is still closed through mid November.
Detour: Westbound Market Street traffic can reach Illinois Street using Meridian and Washington streets.
Where: Between Beecher and Shelby streets
When: Through approximately Dec. 25
Why: A sewer rehabilitation project of Citizens Energy Group
Detour: From Beecher Street, take East Pleasant Run Parkway South Drive instead. From East Pleasant Run Parkway North Drive, head south on Shelby Street to connect to East Pleasant Run Parkway South Drive. Local traffic will still be allowed through. See a map here.
Where: From Ritter to Arlington avenues.
When: Through Dec. 31.
Why: Sewer rehabilitation work as part of the Pleasant Run Tunnel segment of Citizen Energy Group’s DigIndy project.
Detour: Use cross streets East Michigan or East St. Clair. See a map here.
Read: After 15 years and $2B, DigIndy is almost done. It’s probably not big enough.
Where: From Nolan Avenue to just east of Madeira Street.
When: Between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, through mid-December.
Why: A water main project of Citizens Energy Group. The project may require some temporary water service disruptions, of which residents will be notified of through door tags two days in advance.
Detour: If heading east on Bethel Avenue, take Perkins Avenue south to Raymond Street. If heading west on Raymond Street, take Perkins Avenue to Bethel Avenue. See a map here.
Where: At the intersection with Delaware Street downtown.
When: Beginning Nov. 1, expected to reopen later in the month.
Why: To complete intersection improvements related to the Delaware Street rehabilitation project.
Detour: If heading southeast, follow Pennsylvania Street south to Maryland Street then east to Delaware Street. If heading northwest, follow Delaware Street north, then west on Washington Street and south on Pennsylvania Street.
Where: Beneath the North Split interchange
When: Nov. 2 through Nov. 4
Why: Crews working on INDOT’s North Split project need to replace drainage structures.
Detour: Use 16th Street to Commerce Avenue to 13th Street, or the other way around.
Where: 16th from I-65 to Capitol Avenue, including the intersection with Capitol; Missouri Street and Senate Avenue between 15th and 16th streets.
When: Through the end of January.
Why: Underground utility work for the construction of a new Indiana University Health hospital.
Detour: Patients and emergency vehicles will have to use a temporary access road to the Methodist Hospital emergency department.
Where: The intersection of Rural Street, Southeastern Avenue and English Avenue; Rural Street from this intersection to Washington Street will be closed during construction except to local traffic. English Avenue between Oxford and Gray streets will be only accessible to westbound local traffic.
When: Through May 2022.
Why: Construction of a roundabout, related to the Community Justice Campus project.
Detour: Heading south on Rural Street, take East Washington Street, Sherman Drive, Prospect Street, Keystone Avenue and Hoyt Avenue to rejoin with Rural Street south of the intersection. Use the same roads heading northbound. There are also posted bike and pedestrian detours.
