WARREN — Vehicle sales in the Mahoning Valley slid 15.1 percent last month from March 2021, the result of a market that remains depressed due to a prolonged and severe inventory shortage.
The latest data from the Greater Cleveland Automobile Dealers’ Association, which tracks sales across 21 northern Ohio counties, shows in Trumbull, Mahoning and Columbiana counties there were 5,211 new and used vehicles sold in March, down 928 from the prior year.
For the year, there have been 12,777 vehicles sold by member dealers, down from 14,832 last year, a difference of negative 13.8 percent.
New vehicle sales were down 27.1 percent for the month, from 3,282 to 2,392, and for the year the segment is down 25.2 percent, from 8,183 to 6,120.
There were 2,747 used vehicles sold in the month, down 1.3 percent from March 2021 while year-over-year the category was flat for the quarter with 6,420 vehicle sold, up 0.23 percent.
Dealerships in Trumbull County with the most sales to local buyers in March were Toyota of Warren, 133; Diane Sauer Chevrolet, 112; and Klaben Ford Lincoln of Warren, 105.
The top new vehicle sellers were Toyota of Warren, 71; Klaben Ford Lincoln of Warren, 46; and Diane Sauer Chevrolet, 44. Topping the used vehicle list were Diane Sauer Chevrolet, 68; Toyota of Warren, 62; and Klaben Ford Lincoln of Warren, 59.
The overall top seller for the month in the Mahoning Valley was Greenwood Chevrolet, 271.
In the dealers’ association region, new vehicle sales fell 19.5 percent to 19,034 in March from March 2021.
“The market continues to be challenging for all of Northern Ohio, due to extremely limited inventories,” said Louis A. Vitantonio, dealers’ association president. “You can’t sell what you don’t have on the ground. Dealers are ready and willing to place orders, which will ultimately get buyers exactly what they want. It’s a process that consumers are starting to feel comfortable with.”
