JACKSON TWP. – Wayback Burgers will open a new location this summer in the Belden Village Mall area.
The national chain is moving into the former Smoke the Burger Joint site at 4472 Belden Village St. Ohio locations include Broadview Heights, West Chester and Wadsworth. Wayback is also opening a site in Macedonia.
The Stark County restaurant will be the fifth Wayback Burgers location owned and operated by local franchisees in Ohio, the company said Tuesday.

Wayback says it’s among the fastest-growing burger franchises. The chain specializes in cooked-to-order burgers available in single or double patties.
Wayback Burgers has restaurants in more than 35 states, including Alabama, Massachusetts, Texas, Connecticut, Michigan, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Florida, Maryland and California, as well as outside the country in Canada, Japan, South Africa, Ireland, Pakistan and Morocco.
Smoke the Burger Joint closed in late January.
Brian Bailey and Tim Hug co-founded both Smoke the Burger Joint and Old Carolina Barbecue Co. Old Carolina has multiple locations in Stark County.
“This pause in operations will be for an undetermined amount of time as we consider options and plans for the restaurant,” Smoke the Burger Joint had posted on Facebook.

The Belden Village area Wayback will be franchisee Pat Patel’s third location with the chain.
Wayback said the lease has been signed to open the restaurant in the Belden Corner Shops plaza near Robeks Fruit Smoothies. Thirty new jobs are projected.
“We are thrilled to continue in the expansion of Wayback Burgers in Ohio,” Patrick Conlin, president of Wayback Burgers, said in a prepared statement. “… Pat Patel and his family have been excellent partners and we consider it quite an accomplishment for them to be opening their third location.”
Popular sandwiches include the “Cheeeesy,” which has four slices of melted American cheese and two beef patties, sandwiched between an inverted, grilled and buttered bun.
Menu offerings also include cheesesteaks, crispy and grilled chicken sandwiches, veggie burgers, Impossible Burgers, chicken tenders and salads, as well as sides, including fries, onion rings and mac-and-cheese bites.
Also served are hand-dipped milkshakes made with Blue Bunny ice cream.
Patel said in a statement that he’s excited to open a Wayback Burgers in the Canton area.
“After positive community response following the openings of our locations in Broadview Heights and Wadsworth, we knew a third restaurant was something we wanted to pursue,” he said.
The Belden Street location will be 2,500 square feet “with a modernized kitchen visible through glass windows and a pass-through,” allowing customers to watch their orders be prepared.
