The Midland metropolitan area added 8,700 jobs in February, a 9% increase from February 2021.
The Midland metropolitan area had the second-highest employment growth rate in Texas in February, according to a report from the Texas A&M Real Estate Center. The area added 8,700 jobs, a 9% increase from February 2021, for a total of 105,900, the report said.
Texas added 78,000 jobs in February, a 0.6% increase from January, according to the report. Texas is just one of a handful of states that have recovered their jobs lost during the COVID-19 pandemic, the report said, with the Texas economy exceeding pre-pandemic levels since November 2021.
Midland performed better in the employment growth rate than three of Texas’ largest metropolitan areas. The Dallas-Plano-Irving areas had a growth rate of 7.7%, the Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land area had a rate of 6.8% and San Antonio-New Braunfels saw 6.3% growth. Only the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area had a higher growth rate than Midland at 9.7%.
No metropolitan area in the state had a negative growth rate year over year, the report shows. The lowest growth rate was in Wichita Falls, which added 1,300 jobs compared to February 2021 for a growth rate of 2.3%.
