Sunil Gavaskar, the former Indian captain, was surprised by KKR’s batting order selection during the encounter against Delhi Capitals.
On Thursday, the Kolkata Knight Riders suffered their fifth consecutive defeat in the 2022 Indian Premier League.
The Delhi Capitals beat Shreyas Iyer’s side by four wickets at the Wankhede Stadium, completing a double over Shreyas Iyer’s side. The KKR did well to make a game out of the mundane run chase after being reduced to 146/9 in 20 overs, but Rovman Powell’s late contribution guaranteed the Capitals won with an over to play.
With the bowling, Kuldeep Yadav was fantastic for the Capitals, taking 4/14 in three overs against his previous team.
Sunil Gavaskar, the former Indian captain, was puzzled by KKR’s plan to send Nitish Rana later in the batting lineup. At number six, the left-handed batter – one of the Knight Riders’ best players – batted.
“Nitish Rana is doing well at the plate. But, because he was ranked fifth (6), he may be been assigned to the role of finisher. Why would you want Nitish Rana to finish when you already have Andre Russell?” During the post-match show on Star Sports, Gavaskar was questioned.
“Rana has been hitting the middle of the plate so beautifully.” He’ll have to raise the order. Because (Shreyas) Iyer is present, you can’t have him bat at three, so have him bat at four. It makes no sense to send him to bat late in the order today since they will lose the value of those overs.”
Gavaskar went on to say that a “man in the form” must play as many games as possible.
“Having the man in form allows him to face more deliveries, which allows him to score more runs for the team,” Sunil Gavaskar added.
Kolkata Knight Riders were defeated by the Delhi Capitals, who won by four wickets at the Wankhede Stadium.
