2022 Fire Awards: OneRail shifts business model, aims to hire 100 people this year – The Business Journals

by Arifa Rana

OneRail was chosen as one of Orlando Business Journal‘s 2022 Fire Awards honorees, who were featured in OBJ‘s April 29-May 5, 2022, weekly print edition.
The Orlando-based last-mile delivery technology company — which provides clients with access to a network of more than nine million drivers with a 98.6% on-time delivery rate — in 2021 closed a $9 million Series A investment round, surpassed the 100-employee mark and grew its revenue by 484%.
Here’s more from CEO Bill Catania:
What was your company’s biggest accomplishment of 2021? The most remarkable accomplishment for OneRail in the last 12 months has been the expansion of our capabilities: our shift from a 3-in-1 to a 4-in-1 solution; the rapid growth of our national courier network; and our overall team member growth.
How did you get it done? First, our seismic shift — now promoting a sea change in last-mile logistics — was accomplished by building out our micro fulfillment capabilities. We began with 55 nodes and have been able to manage inventory for major headphone manufacturer Skullcandy, among other large brands. Second, we expanded our national courier network, known as our Logistics Partner Network, by 1 million drivers to 7.5 million in the first half of 2021 alone. By year’s end, that number had reached 8.2 million. Our current network is 9 million-plus drivers. Third, the OneRail team has experienced exponential growth in the last year, as employment was up an astonishing 75% from January 2020 to end-of-year 2021 — from nine employees to nearly 100 — aided by its new office in SouthPark Circle, which can accommodate 140 employees.
What strategies have you implemented to recruit and/or retain talent in a competitive labor market? OneRail is up to the challenge in recruiting and retaining team members, exploring many avenues in sourcing and attracting talent — from online presence to local recruiting firms. A big initiative in 2022 for OneRail is to hire an internal recruiter. In an effort to retain top talent, one of the most notable management ideas that sets OneRail apart from the competition is the opportunity for growth available to all team members. OneRail wants to ensure that team members have the ability to learn from all levels of leadership. Senior executives consistently sit among the workforce, rather than creating the impression of being over them. The overall way the leadership team presents themselves circles back to “One Team, One Vision.” In an effort to keep employees motivated, management continuously finds ways to show employee appreciation. Weekly challenges with incentives are part of the norm, often given on the fly during companywide town halls, as a way of showing appreciation for forward-thinking. Incentives are also often given out periodically for a team member’s hard work. OneRail has gone to great lengths to even find out team members’ favorite snacks, stores, restaurants and more to personalize incentives.
What is your company’s top goal for 2022? To recruit and retain top talent to the Central Florida area.
In the past year, what progress have you seen in the growth of Central Florida’s entrepreneurial and tech ecosystems? It’s thrilling to be part of Central Florida’s innovative ecosystem. Silicon Valley no longer has a monopoly on innovation, and Central Florida has made that clear. Over the last few years, Orlando has transformed into a prominent tech hub, ranked by LinkedIn as one of the fastest-growing cities for entrepreneurs
Are you hiring now? OneRail is hiring in all departments. Currently, we have approximately 40 open opportunities, and are on track with our goal to hire a total of 100 additional team members this year.
